Survival of Children during the Armenian Genocide: Agency, Empowerment, 'Growing up'

Dr Nazan Maksudyan

Relying on survivor testimonies (oral and written), my research delineates the ways in which Armenian children and youth exercised historical agency during the Armenian genocide. Although the words genocide and children put together reminds people of victim situations, I argue that Armenian survivor children were strong, calm, and resourceful agents. In order to survive, they used their intelligence, talent, and charms. They assumed agency and empowered themselves. In an effort to put my research in context with genocide studies, I also aspire to provide a comparative perspective that dwells upon the experiences of children during the Holocaust.
