The paper presents interesting information on the transportation of horses from Brazil to Angola. These come from archives in Brazil, Lisbon and Luanda and shed lots of light on the use of horses to extend Portuguese control in Angola through war in the eighteenth century. The paper surveys the legislation about the transportation of horses to Angola from late seventeenth century onward, and it relates efforts to increase the number of horses to the escalation of war of enslavement in the early eighteenth century. This issue has been largely ignored by the scholarship on Angola and that there is a lot to learn from it about how Portuguese Angola subdued African resistance at that time.
