Second Session of the Colloquium At the Centre of the World? A Spatial Approach to the Hajj Pilgrimage

In this session Saud Serhan, Researcher at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, will talk in his lecture "Political or Apolitical Hajj" about different positions about the question whether the occasion of the hajj pilgrimage could or should be used for political ends, while Prof Dr Werner Ende, emeritus of the University of Freiburg, will shed light on theological regulations and practical aspects in regard to the participation of women in performing the hajj pilgrimage.

The Session takes place at ZMO and will be moderated by Dr Chanfi Ahmed (IAAW). Please find more information in the invitation flyer.

Lecture by ZMO director Ulrike Freitag

This lecture by ZMO director Ulrike Freitag is titled "The discovery of historical authenticity as a resource of identity on the Arabian Peninsula?".

The lecture is part of the lecture Series Die Sehnsucht nach dem Echten, organized by the Humboldt University and the Leibniz Research Alliance Historical Authenticity. The lecture series addresses different questions in regard to the construction of historical authenticity through objects, documents and places.

"The Well" tells the trepeditions of an Algerian village embar-goed by French soliders during war-torn Algeria under French colonialism. In the middle of the Algerian War of Independence, soldiers of the French army suspect a village in southern Algeria to host the mujahideen having decimated a French commando. The soldiers surround the village and the vulnerable villagers are gradually faced with thirst. The villagers soon realize that they have to either confront the soldiers, either die of thirst trapped within the walls of the village...

Displacing the Displaced: Critical Thinking on Urban Projects in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania)
Lecture by ZMO fellow Patrick Schukalla as part of the Urban Studies Seminar

Urban large-scale development projects stand out in terms of size, number of affected people, financial expenditure, political relevance and media representation. They appear as something “special”, urban contestations accompany them and political preferences become evident along their planning process. In the case of the New Kigamboni City Project in Dar es Salaam / Tanzania, which was planned and much debated since 2008, planners and government officials intended to dis - possess and resettle a huge number of inhabitants of Dar es Salaam’s periurban area of Kigamboni in order to make way for “an ultramodern city and for orderly development”...
