From Extremism to Moderation: Religious Trans - formation in Contemporary Saudi Arabia
Lecture by Besnik Sinani (Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies)

In 2017, Muhammad b. Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, announced the return of his country to religious moderation, a period in time that he marked as ‘pre-1979.’ In the West, where Saudi Arabia is often portrayed as a global promoter of a conservative and even extremist interpretation of Islam, the announcement of the Crown Prince was received with both enthusiasm and skepticism. What does Saudi religious moderation mean? How will it affect the religious policies of the country domestically and abroad? What are the driving principles of this policy, and how is it related to broader changes in the Saudi society?

Ce thème traite de la problématique générale des rapports entre dis- cours et réalité, en particulier, l‘infl uence du contexte social sur les formes d‘expression, aussi divergente et transcendante que puisse paraître la condition humaine sous-jacente. Cette tentative est basée sur l’étude de certains aspects relatifs à l’interaction au sein du champ religieux tel que pratiqué à différents niveaux de la pyramide sociale dans les sociétés sahariennes, entre ce qui est transcendant et sacré dans les croyances et représenta- tions, d’une part, et ce qui est du vécu quotidien...

ZMO Visiting Research Fellowships 2019
Call for Applications, Deadline: 17 August 2018

Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin, Germany, is inviting applications for Visiting Research Fellowships for the calendar year of 2019. The centre seeks to attract outstanding postdoctoral scholars who are engaged in projects relevant to ZMO’s research profile.

The call is open to senior researchers and recent postdocs in the humanities and the social sciences. We particularly encourage applications by candidates from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Scholars currently based in Germany are not eligible to apply.

More than a thousand years ago, Islamic scholars and thinkers embarked on an exciting period of scientific study. They translated Greek and Sanskrit works on astronomy into Arabic and used them to develop their own methods for observing the mysterious heavenly bodies twinkling in the night sky. They recorded the movements of the sun and the moon. They calculated the diameters of the Earth and the planets they could see from the ground, and pondered their place in the universe...

Peter Wien was from October 2012 till July 2013 research fellow at ZMO. He worked here on his research project on New Science in Arabia: Networks in the History of Biology in the Gulf.
