ZMO mourns the death of Dr Faleh Abdul-Jabbar (1946-2018)

Dr Abdul-Jabbar was the director of the Iraq Institute for Strategic Studies in Beirut and one of the most prominent social scientists of the Arab world. As an engaged intellectual figure he contributed regularly to current debates in the Arab and Anglophone public. 1978 he left his home country Iraq due to political reasons, and received his PhD at Birkbeck University, London in political sociology. He published numerous studies on Iraq and the Middle East in the following years. His research focused on sociology, tribal dynamics and state formation, civil society processes and cultural discourses. In February 2017 Faleh Abdul-Jabbar was a guest researcher at ZMO. We lose with him a critical and wise dialogue partner and a warmhearted and caring colleague.
