Performing Critique in Chaza Charafeddine's "Divine Comedy"
Lecture by Charlotte Bank (Berlin) as part of the ZMO Colloquium Performing Gender and Sexuality in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia

The photography-based series “Divine Comedy” (2010) by the Lebanese visual artist Chaza Charafeddine offers a subtle critique of the changing sexual mores in Middle Eastern/Islamic societies. Charafeddine inserts contemporary portraits of members of Beirut’s underground transgender and gender fl uid community into collages created by using a combination of reproductions of Persian and Mughal miniatures and popular Islamic imagery from the mid-20th century. Charafeddine portrays her models as strongly symbolic creatures, such as angels, the Buraq, brides, sultanas, but also as playful beings such as composite creatures of peacocks and women or as a “fruit lady”.

Vorsichtig formuliert befindet sich der Raum Nordafrika/Naher und Mittlerer Osten im Stadium des Übergangs; besser noch: im Umbruch. Davon sind kein Land und keine politische Ordnung ausgenommen. Die Frage ist allein: Was wird das Ergebnis sein?

Die Epoche des Umbruchs hatte mit Iran (1979) begonnen. Das Ergebnis war eine Islamische Republik; aber niemand kann übersehen, dass im Inneren dieses politischen Systems ein starker Druck wirkt, die säkularen Elemente im Hinblick auf europäische Standards von Bürgerrechten zu stärken...

Um Anmeldung wird gebeten. Eine Kooperationsveranstaltung der Gesellschaft zur Förderung des ZMO, der Katholischen Akademie in Berlin und der HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform.

2001 erschien der Sammelband "Sendungsbewußtsein oder Eigennutz: Zu Motivation und Selbstverständnis islamischer Mobilisierung". Der Band ist nun online als Open Access-Publikation verfügbar.

Die ZMO-Studie gibt eine Perspektive von innen zu verschiedenen islamischen Bewegungen, besonders auch zu fundamentalistischen und radikalen Gruppierungen. Die hier versammelten Untersuchungen decken eine große geographische Breite ab. Die Beiträge befassen sich mit islamischen Bewegungen von Marokko im Westen bis Indien und Pakistan im Osten, von Usbekistan im Norden bis Sudan im Süden der islamischen Welt.
