Claiming and Making Muslim Worlds: Across and Between the Local and the Global
Closing Conference of ZMO’s twelve-year research programme Muslim Worlds – Worlds of Islam? Conceptions, Practices, and Crises of the Global.

In the eight panels of the conference, scholars specifically address the notion of Claiming and Making Muslim Worlds, exploring religious affiliations and practices, extending to social, economic and cultural modalities of life. From a variety of disciplines, panellists discuss pluralities of actors, institutions, locations and world making – for Muslim subjects and non-Muslims alike. The keynote lecture will be held by Professor Seema Alavi from Delhi University. On 4 April at 6 pm, a roundtable discussion, titled Was sind muslimische Welten? Fragen an den globalen Norden, moderated by ZMO’s Director Professor Ulrike Freitag, will take place at Leibniz-Gemeinschaft Chausseestraße 111, 10115 Berlin.

Translocal Ritual Practices in a Shiʻa Community of Oman
Lecture by Zahir Bhalloo (Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies) as part of the ZMO-Colloquium.

This first lecture of the ZMO Colloquium in the Summer Term 2019 studies the performance of Muharram rituals among the Lawatiya Shia minority of Oman. It examines in particular to what extent the performance of certain translocal ritual texts have been used in the past and continue to be used today by the Lawatiya community to cultivate and to preserve a distinctive social and religious Shiʻi identity that is embedded in the landscape of the western Indian Ocean.

ZMO Studien 24, jetzt online frei abrufbar

"I did not forgive him. But after many years, I allowed myself to accept his apology."
A Report on the Conference Circumstances from Post-Apartheid South Africa by ZMO Vice Director Sonja Hegasy

From 5 to 9 December 2018, Sonja Hegasy attended the international conference "Recognition, Reparation, Reconciliation. The Light and Shadow of Historical Trauma" that was held at Stellenbosch University (SU), hosted by Prof. Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela. Her conference report does not deal with the remarkable array of presentations given; rather it is about the circumstances of this meeting and how they unfolded: what struck her from the opening was the emphasis on praxis and positionality.

Domestic Servants in Colonial India

Domestic service is a ubiquitous aspect of India’s historical past, yet this theme has attracted very little research attention. DOS, a European Research Council Starting Grant funded project (2015-18) took a fresh look at this topic, focusing on the period between the eighteenth and the twentieth century, approximately the time of British colonial rule in India. In his contribution to the IAAW Newsletter, principal investigator Nitin Sinha talks about the project.

Why it’s OK for young Muslims to be radical

"Radical thought can be positive and progressive, it doesn’t have to mean joining a death cult", says Ali Nobil Ahmad. In his article he writes what policymakers are getting wrong about the term "radical" and how different it was for his generation growing up in Britain in the 70s and 80s compared to the generation that grew up after 2001.
