Ways
of Thinking the World in Africa and Asia
This series of lectures provides a platform for the presentation
and discussion of ways of thinking ‘the world’ from
Asia and Africa. Visions of the global and claims to the universal
are formulated and negotiated in societies around the world; theorizing
and universalizing are no prerogatives of the West. The lecture
series explores these dynamics further. The point is to engage
with thinkers, knowledge, and intellectual traditions from Asia
and Africa as significant contributing sources to current global
debates, also with a view to ethics and politics.
The series presents a balanced mixture of topical issues around
the theme, and has invited selected critical thinkers, philosophers
and social scientists to the task. It is run in cooperation with
the project on intercultural philosophy at the Philosophy Department,
Humboldt University of Berlin, and the online journal for intercultural
philosophy, polylog (www.polylog.org).

Grammatik" des Japanischen
Ikonographische Zeichen gelten als semantisch dicht; die japanische
Sprache als stark kontextgebunden. Welche Weltansichten oder Sprachspiele
legen diese semiotischen Eigenschaften dann nahe? Das wre hier
mit Wilhelm von Humboldt die Frage.

Ijtihad (independent reasoning) and Legal Change in Modern Islam:
The Discourses of the Sunni Ulama
The talk will draw on examples from South Asia and the Middle
East, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. It
will examine some of the key legal and religious debates in which
Muslim scholars have engaged, their conceptual frameworks, and
their implications for issues of religious authority in contemporary
Islam.

Islamic Discourses on European Visitors to West Africa in the Mid Nineteenth Century
As an important part of ideological justifications for colonialism, European discourses on Africa as the “dark continent” have been contentious since the nineteenth century, or even earlier. Still, Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) has spurred a new genre of critiques against European discourses on societies of Asia, Middle East and Africa and the linkage between those discourses and European imperialism. One of the fields of study reflecting some of Said’s influential ideas is Subaltern Studies, which emphasizes the agency of the natives in the context of encounter with the Europeans. Drawing from Subaltern Studies, I examine Islamic discourses on European visitors to West Africa during the mid nineteenth century through a critical reading of selected writings of al-Shaykh Ahmad al-Bakka’i (d. 1865).

This paper discusses the development of a specific ethics of religious engagement in an African society in the context of global Christianity and its incorporation into development strategies and knowledge transfer. I discuss how this ethics of engagement creates new spaces for agency and subjectivity for young women and men.

My aim is to argue that the defensive stance in postcolonial
thought is giving way to a critical approach to issues and challenges
that African societies face in the global context. I will try
to identify what these challenges are, and how African philosophers
are engaging or participating in delineating, defining, and understanding
them.

Offenheit, Durchlssigkeit, Fragilitt und
Differenzialitt jeder existierenden Kultur zu denken
erlaubt: Nur dasjenige, was gegeben, genommen und
erwidert, was bergeben, bertragen, wieder-, weiter-
und fortgegeben kann, ist kulturell und nicht
natrlich (das schliet eine Kultur der Natur mit
ein). Kulturelle Phnomene sind das, was sie sind, nur
als transitorische, das heit sie existieren nur in
den Serien, Versionen und Brchen ihrer Weitergaben
und sind damit einer bestndigen Dynamik der
Abweichung, Vernderung, Aneignung, bersetzung,
Interpretation und Verwendung ausgesetzt.

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transfor-mation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this Seminar in Ot-toman Urban Studies.
